Brands typically have product promotions to increase sales, foster brand awareness, or introduce new products. Let's take Ben & Jerry's ice cream, for example. Some promotions might be marketed directly to consumers, like Free Cone Day, or other discounts or freebies. Retailers may offer these promotions in their Store, and may be compensated or incentivized by the brand -- if the retailer follows the promotional rules and guidelines set by the brand.

Ben & Jerry's may have its own retail ice cream stores and sell its products in other retail outlets. In fact, Ben & Jerry's as the brand may even have multiple promotions happening at the same time, even offering different promotions to different store types, like offering one promotion in their company-owned retail ice cream stores and another promotion in supermarkets that are owned by another retailer.

The brand may also offer promotions that are not directly marketed to the consumer. For example, for every $500 that the retailer orders, the brand will give the retailer 3 free items. This promotion still has promotional rules and guidelines set by the brand that the retailer must follow.
